Opposite: A basin in the guest-house bathroom. I would never have chosen a pink-decorated sink or a marble with as much gray vein as this, but I was happy to leave it alone, and now I have become rather fond of the textures and detail. A nice variation on my white.

Above: The bidet came with the house, and I kept it.
The inexpensive stained brown wood surrounding the windows in the guest bathroom was one of the rare areas to escape the white paintbrush. I felt like breaking up the white, and the brown border frames a lovely view of tall, closely planted trees.
The guest-house kitchenette countertop is made up of small, oblong orange tiles. When I bought the house, I imagined they would be among the first to go, but after a while I came to enjoy their cheerful energy. When it was time to redo the kitchenette, I left them as they were and painted the rest of the kitchen—except for the brown-framed window directly above them—my usual white.
The guest bathroom came with an eclectic range of materials: brass fittings, heavily veined gray marble countertops, a white porcelain basin decorated with a pink floral motif, blue-gray bath and shower tiles with intermittent pink detail. And a bidet. None of which I would have chosen, but with the woodwork and bathroom closets painted white, I have become fond of the way this room looks.
There are perhaps fifteen old-fashioned copper lantern-style electric sconces on the house and in the garden. I thought I would keep them for the time being but replace them later; now I have become quite attached to them.
